Today is Slice of life Tuesday – a writing challenge hosted at Two Writing Teachers.
Today is the beginning of Chinese New Year and it is Year of the Pig. I hope this prediction about this auspicious year is correct:
“According to Chinese astrology predictions, the year of the Earth Pig 2019 is a great year to make money, and a good year to invest. 2019 is an auspicious year because the Pig attracts success in all the spheres of life.”
When I taught, Chinese New Year was always a favourite unit of study. We:
-read many stories. For example:
*Lion Dancer by Kate Waters
*Cat and Rat by Ed Young
*Sam and the Lucky Money by Karen Chinn
-wrote dragon stories
-studied the traditions that were practiced
-created dragons, lanterns
It is important for children to learn about other cultures and be exposed to the importance of other traditions.
I still enjoy reading my Chinese horoscope. As a January baby, my animal is the Rabbit. (One has to be careful to choose the correct animal as dates do not follow or months exactly)
According to the horoscope, this should be a good year as the rabbit connects strongly with the Pig.

Happy Chinese New Year to you as well, Bev. Looks like I am a rabbit as well, if I am reading the chart correctly. I don’t know much about the Chinese Zodiac signs so I need to do some reading.
I’ve always enjoyed the history/culture and sharing with my students. The horoscopes are just fun.
I love your enthusiasm for this holiday and agree it is important to understand others. In NYC, it is a school holiday.
Hope you enjoyed your holiday!
