This week for “Top Ten Tuesday” – the weekly meme hosted at “That Artsy Reader Girl” – asks:
What Books On My TBR I’m Avoiding Reading and Why
or in other words
Forgotten/Ignored Books on My TBR Shelves
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
I know and it is one of the books I’ve had the longest! I’ve started and stopped it numerous times. And, I’m glued to the series. Not sure why, but it is on my 2019 must read lists!
2. Into the Abyss by Carol Shaben
This true account of the deadly crash that killed politician Grant Notley (father of the former premier of Alberta Rachel Notley) is about what happened to the 4 men who survived. I was living in Alberta when the crash happened and it still haunts me. Maybe now I am ready to read it.
3. A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
I bought it because it was highly recommended but it still sits on the shelf unread. I haven’t even started it.
4. The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
A book with lots of hype and when I started it, I just couldn’t get into it.
5. The last 6 books of Sue Grafton.
When she died before she finished her series, I was starting T . I closed the book and haven’t finished the series. Really must do that.
6. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
When I started it, I was really intrigued by the concept, but it is another one I just couldn’t get into. I never even saw the movie.
7. Casual Vacancy (as well as the others by) J.K. Rowling/Robert Galbraith
the Harry Potter series has too strong a hold – and just can’t seem to be able to switch to her other adult series.
8. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig
I had this book for years and never read it. Then gave it away. last year I saw it in a thrift shop and bought it to try again. Still waiting!
9. Suite Francaise by Irene Nemeronsky
I was intrigued by the author and the book and started it, but never finished it.
10. Books by Jane Austen
Until this year I had never read any of Jane Austen’s books. I started a challenge for myself and dared myself to read them all as well as any Jane Austen retellings. I’ve read two (Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion and several retellings. Still need to finish the others.
Which are your favourites from my list? Any recommendations? Which to start first??
I love GOLDFINCH but I get it because it so LONG. My TBR books I’m avoiding
Thanks Anne. Now that the movie is out, I hope to finally tackle it.
I hope you get to finish The Handmaid’s Tale soon. It’s a wonderful story, and the sequel to it was just released today!
My TTT.
Thanks Lydia. I ‘m determined to finally finish it asap
Suite Francaise was worth it. Casual Vacancy I really enjoyed–but I’m not a huge Potter fan (fantasy and magic just aren’t me. I love many of the characters and admire the author tremendously). Zen of Motorcycle… is one that I declared I am no longer even pretending I will read, lol. Read what suits your at the moment.
Thanks! Great advice. I really am a “what mood am I in” kind of reader. I think all these books have that in common – just haven’t been in the mood to read them – yet! lol
Now, that’s an intriguing question that I am going to ponder. I recently read the graphic novel version of “The Handmaid’s Tale”. Maybe you want to start with that one.
I’ll have to check it out!
The Handmaid’s Tale definitely should have been on my list! I’ve meant to read that book for forever.
Same here. I’ve started it numerous times over the years. Even watched the series!
I find that Donna Tartt’s prose is soo not for everyone. I loved The Goldfinch and The Secret History. Both are two of my favourite books. BUT, I know a lot of people find her writing to be too descriptive and dull all at once so I definitely see why it’s not connected with you! (And I had a similar problem with another book by her. I can never remember the name, that’s how little I connected with it.)
Thanks Jessica. We are all so different in our likes and dislikes – but do love the idea of a painting as central to a story. I do plan to read it.
