Guest Post by Valerie Nifora: Life is Too Short

wow-logo

As part of the WOW blog tour for Valerie Nifora’s amazing poetry book I Asked the Wind, Valerie is sharing her thoughts on what prevents people from fulfilling their dreams

Welcome Valerie

Life is short. Do it now before you die.

My son, when he was much younger wandered into my office and between my conference calls, he asked me, “Mommy, how many days have I been alive?” I broke out my calculator and did some math and he was roughly 1,965 days. “Wow, he said. That seems like a lot.” He then wandered off to go play with a toy. But, that exchange has stuck with me ever since.

The funniest thing about living, is the fact that you have absolutely no control what happens to you at all. Who’s to say, that you don’t get into a car accident and not make it home? Or what if you get hit by a bus crossing the street? Or, suddenly come down with a disease? All of a sudden the number of days that you’ve been alive take on a new meaning.
I did some of my own math and as of this writing, I’ve been around for roughly 16,600 days (give or take a few), and who’s to say if I actually get another 16,000 days to wake up and try again. Why am I telling you this? Because if you think about how long you’ve been alive, or potentially how much longer you might have to live based on some statistical model — I think you’ll probably come to the conclusion, that it’s simply not enough days. Life is short.

Which brings up another point, since life is short — why are you putting off all those things that you wanted to do? Why aren’t you trying to achieve your dreams, even if in small measures? What can you account for in the number of days you’ve been alive? I’m by no means advocating selling everything and joining the circus, but why not make a small choice every day to do something that matters to you?

It could be volunteering the use of your talent in some way. It could be writing down your family history as you recall it, so that future generations might know more about their roots. It might just be socking a little extra into a retirement account so that you can take that trip you always wanted. Or maybe, it’s hugging your son just a little longer at bedtime. Whatever it is that’s your heart’s desire — start today. Because life is short, and you want to make sure you used those days wisely when they come to an end.

Thanks so much Valerie for sharing these wise words to help us reach for our dreams.

WOW Blog Tour for”I Asked The Wind” by Valerie Nifora

wow-logo

I am honoured to be part of the WOW! Women of Writing Blog Tour for Valerie Nifora’s poetry book I Asked the Wind, which I read and am now reviewing.

(Please note: I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.)

My Review:

Valerie Nifora has given us a heartfelt, powerful series of poems, written over 15 years, that lays bare her love and heartbreak.

From the very first poem – “I Love You. Eternal”, we are drawn into the images and sensory of each poem.
There is heartache; there is love; there is so much sharing from the depths of her soul – not only of pain, but of what love can truly be.

I was very moved by Nifora’s poems. And, I know you be as well.

I recommend this book of poetry by Valerie Nifora.

About I Asked the Wind

IAskedtheWind-quote-SFBookReview

Book Summary

I Asked the Wind: A Collection of Romantic Poetry is a journey into romance, love and loss through poetry. The poems published in this collection span over 15 years of writing. Often starting with short rhythmic patterns, each poem’s lyrical tone is filled with inspired words to express the deep emotion experienced in the intricacies of romance.

Handwritten in a journal and hidden away until this publication, the poems chronicle the journey into and out of love. Written in three parts, the book enables the reader to transverse the intensity of romantic love, from the first moment of falling in love, to the intense pain of heartbreak.

Beautiful and powerful in its lyrical and simple verse, the reader is immediately immersed in a world of sensuality, passion, desire, and innocence; all woven together into a tapestry of human emotion. Each poem transports the reader to a story through the art of poetry. Drawing on natural elements such as the sun, sand, wind and moon, this collection explores the light and darkness of romantic love, leaving the reader questioning if love was ever real at all.
