It’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday! What are You Reading? hosted at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

Hard to believe it is almost June and we had frost last night and I had to cover our tomato plants. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

What I Read Last Week

I read 7 books – 2 women’s fiction, 3 romances, 1 non-fiction, and a MG novel.

nature fix 35187181

The Nature Fix by Florence Williams. This has taken a month to read as it was read for a book study. Full of amazing insights as to why nature is so important to our well-being. A fascinating read.

I rediscovered the writer T.K. Leigh and read 3 romances by her this week. Enjoyed them all immensely. Will need to buy a couple to complete a series and so plan to read more for sure.

It’s time once again for Connect Five Friday, hosted at Book Date by Kathryn – the meme where we share five book/reading things that connect in some way.

I have received hundreds of free ebooks from Freebooksy, Bookbub and other ebook providers and have read a fair number of these. Many start a series but it is not often I will break down and buy others in the series unless it really grabs me,

Here are 4 authors from whom I’ve received and read free ebooks and then bought more of their books (because I loved their writing and want to support them):

T.K Leigh. This is the latest author I’ve been reading and have so enjoyed her Dating Games Series that I had to buy the third – Wicked Games. Just finished The Other Side of Someday and loved it. Will probably buy more of her books.

Katie Graykowski. I have received a number of her ebooks for free and really enjoyed the books I read (Perfect Summer, Cold as January, Sweet Susie Sweet), I ended up buying her Marilyns Box set because I had to finish the series.

Children will enjoy this tale of dogs, friendship and rescues. The adventures in this book will capture children’s attention and have them rooting for Ginger and Zen.

It is a cute story which children will enjoy.

It’s Monday! What are You Reading?

its-mondayit2527s2bmonday25212bwhat2bare2byou2breading

It’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday! What are You Reading?” hosted at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

Even with some grey clouds, it was another lovely weekend. And this is the Victoria Day long weekend in Canada – so tomorrow is a holiday. Even heard fireworks, both tonight and yesterday.

What I Read Last Week

I read 5 books – 2 fantasies, 1 non-fiction, 1 romance and a picture book.

vision in silver21457243

Vision in Silver by Ann Bishop. I finished the reread of The Others series with this book. And loved it as much as before.

wild-sign-54325980._sy475_

Wild Sign by Patricia Briggs. I’ve waited a while for this latest in her Alpha and Omega series – it was well worth wait.

creativity 50719532._SY475_

Creativity by John Cleese. A very short book that actually has some interesting points about creativity.

act your age DB51824384

Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert. Loved this third book in her romance series of the three Brown sisters.

Outside Inside 54968319

Outside, Inside by LeUyen Pham. An amazing picture book about the pandemic.

(From Goodreads: From Caldecott honoree LeUyen Pham, Outside, Inside is a moving picture book celebrating essential workers and the community coming together to face the challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic.)

Book Blogger Hop

Book Blogger Hop New

While visiting “Elza Reads” blog, I discovered “The Book Blogger Hop“, hosted at “Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer”. Thought I would participate.

The Book Blogger’s hop‘s purpose is to give bloggers a chance to follow other blogs, learn about new books, befriend other bloggers, and receive new followers to your own blog. Every week, there will be a prompt featuring a book related question.

This week’s question:

Do you have a monthly/yearly budget for books? Or are you a “What’s a book budget” kind of reader?

I really don’t have a budget for buying books. Now that I am retired, I usually read a book a day, so if I bought all the books I read I would be broke!  I usually only buy the books I must have (too many holds on The Midnight Library so I bought it), or love the author (Louise Penny, Suzanna Kearsley).

I do look for bargains though, do visit second-hand shops (or did before covid), trade with friends and grab free ebooks. I also use the library a lot.

Connect Five Friday – Novels with Letters

connect-5-3

It’s time once again for Connect Five Friday, hosted at Book Date by Kathryn – the meme where we share five book/reading things that connect in some way.

I so enjoy reading books that have letters in the novel, or make up the novel. There are so many epistolary novels and this is one type.

Here are 5 books with letters that I have read:

guernsey 2728527

The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. I loved this book and all the characters.

charing cross 368916

84, Charing Cross Road, by Helen Hanff. I read this quite a while ago but it has always stayed with me. Might be time for a reread.

daddy-long9176221

Daddy Long Legs by Jean Webster . I reread this earlier this year and enjoyed it as much as the first time.

Dear F. 451 32768516

Dear  Fahrenheit 451 by Annie Spence . This was an interesting read – love letters to books, along with a few break-up letters as well.

letters from skye 16127238

Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole. A novel with 2 timelines and how love can blossom through letters.

It’s Monday! What are You Reading?

It’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday! What are You Reading?” hosted at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

A lovely day, a lovely weekend – gardens were readied for planting and the lawn mowed. We got out for a bit sun and fresh air.

What I Read Last Week

I read 7 books – 4 fantasies, 1 science fiction, 1 non-fiction, and a picture book.

I am rereading Ann Bishop’s The Others series (again)– it is my go-to comfort read when I need an escape, to be able to disappear into a familiar world and enjoy a fabulous story. I have one more of the series to finish. I read the 4th and 5th book at the start of the week – to finish the reread I had started months ago. Then I decided I needed to complete the series and so read the first 3.

WOW Blog Tour for Sins of Our Mothers by Nicole Souza

wow-logo

I am honoured to be part of the WOW! Women of Writing Blog Tour for Nicole Souza’s dystopian novel Sins of Our Mothers which h I read and am now reviewing.

(Please note: I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.)

My Review:

Nicole Souza has written a fascinating dystopian novel, with a unique world, created for and by women, 1500 years in the future.

This novel is full of intriguing characters, plot twists and mystery. It takes a while for us to learn who the defects really are and how this futuristic world of women works the way it does.

I was drawn to the main character Lyratelle and her struggle to help the defects. I found as well, the world-building was creative and much of the prejudice/hate towards the defects reflected what we are facing now.

This novel was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it especially to anyone who loves science fiction or dystopian novels.

Book Summary

It has been fifteen hundred years since the solar flare devastation of the Global Catastrophe. Due to the radioactivity in the harvesting fields, society dismisses its defective children as nothing more than flawed products of the malfunctioned seeds in the field.

But Lyratelle, a hyper-observant musical prodigy, believes these “defects” are intelligent, particularly her own sibling, the youngest child of her impervious mother. Abandoning her dream career, Lyratelle climbs the bureaucratic ladder to run the Defect Research Center, where she can safeguard the child.

With an underground team of women who share her uncertainties, Lyratelle unearths the Old History truth that womankind’s survival actually hinges on the existence of these defects.

When General Sarah Love, the city’s most powerful advocate against the defects, detects Lyratelle’s sympathy toward the creatures, she threatens the life of Lyratelle’s sibling.

Now Lyratelle’s desperate attempt to save this child endangers everyone she loves—her team, her family, even the existence of the defects themselves.

WOW Blog Tour for “Time to Reset” by Karen Brown Tyson

wow-logo

I am honoured to be part of the WOW! Women of Writing Blog Tour for Karen Brown Tyson’s devotional Time to Reset which I read and am now reviewing.

(Please note: I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.)

My Review:

It has been a while since I started my day with a daily devotional. I have felt the stress from this pandemic and my husband’s health issues, as well as my own  and I have felt alone at times. Karen’s book came at the perfect time. I needed a reset; I needed a reminder that God is always with me and  there is an answer my prayers.

Karen’s book is written in an easy-to-read  layout and provides a path to get closer to God. Each day is a similar format: Each day starts with a prayer (a Note to Self), followed by a personal story that relates to the theme for that day. Then a scripture story expands on the theme. There follows Timeout Takeaways that further expound on what has been discussed, along with verses to read. The use of GLOW ends each day and this is a special acronym for:

G – Grateful

L- Listening

O- Observation

W- Witness

The prayers and stories are very personal and allows us to draw close to Karen and God.

Day 19 had most meaning for me. Karen asked to be given focus and direction for that day in her opening prayer – that is something I truly need. The takeaways that day stressed that “God is always ready to refresh us and offer us our second wind, but we have to want to receive it.”

I will go back now and really focus on each day’s message and spend more time to learn what God has planned for me. Reading for review gave me an overview, with not much time to focus on each day. I plan to remedy that – and read more deeply, a day at a time.

I highly recommend this wonderful devotional by Karen Brown Tyson.
