WOW (Women on Writing) Blog Tour for “Gypsy for God” by Yvonne M. Morgan

I am honoured to be part of the WOW! Women on Writing Blog Tour for Gypsy for God by Yvonne M. Morgan.

I must apologize – I was not able to finish reading her book or write the review. The past 2 weeks have been challenging. My hubby was in hospital last week and though he is now out he is not 100%. I will be having my 2nd knee replacement tomorrow morning. It should go okay – but recovery will be interesting as my hubby may need more support.

I plan to read and review Yvonne’s book next month.

It’s Monday! What are You Reading?

t’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday! What are You Reading? hosted at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

This will be my last post here for a few weeks as I am having my second knee replacement on Tuesday morning. I probably won’t be online through September asw I concentrate on recovery. I will be reading lots I am sure. Last week ,y hubby ended up in hospital for 4 days. His potassium level jumped so high that I was told without his pacemaker, he wouldn’t have survived. He also had a touch of pneumonia. At least the shakiness has passed and he feels much better. Hopefully, he can take care of me ok, altho we do have help from several of our children.

I read 3 books this week,: – 1 contemporary romance, 1 woman’s fiction, and a mystery.

Must Love Flowers by Debbie Macomber. A lovely romance by one of my favourite authors.

Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn. Loved this mystery novel with 60+ female characters who happen to be retired assassins.

Summer at Hideaway Key by Barbara Davis. This woman’s fiction was another enjoyable read, an epistolary as well.

WOW Blog Tour for “Gypsy for God” – Guest Post by Yvonne M. Morgan

I am honoured to be part of the WOW! Women of Writing Blog Tour for  Yvonne M. Morgan’s novel Gypsy for God

Today, Ms. Morgan is visiting my blog to share advice on coping with grief.

Welcome Yvonne !

Grief Changes us

I experienced all the stages of grief with my son’s death in 1993 and then again as I watched my parents slip away many years later. The experts define the five stages of grief as:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

But, as I moved through these stages, I realized they did not cover everything as I learned grief changes us.

Feeling Alone in Grief

When someone close dies, we can feel very isolated in our grief. The world returns to normal as we continue the journey of sorrow. Friends and family laugh again, and they go out to eat again while we feel trapped in our sadness. I questioned if I could ever enjoy life again. Where could I go to find someone who would stand beside me in my darkest days?

But we are not alone. The Bible reminds us that God stands with us. Psalm 34:18; “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” I felt the Lord’s closeness during my days of grief, and I did what I could to stay connected to Him. I still attended church, and I kept reading my Bible. The Lord’s companionship allowed me time to heal my heart before I returned to the world.

Grieving at different stages

With the death of our son, both my husband and I grieved for our loss. But over time, we found ourselves at different stages in our despair. As I slumped on the couch with tears flowing freely, my husband would bury his pain in his work. These differences caused other conflicts that I had not expected. And I could not share my pain with the person I loved because he had his own pain to deal with in these circumstances.

Once again, I found comfort in God’s words. Matthew 5:4; “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” We needed to look to God for comfort instead of each other. We joined a Christian support group for parents who lost infants. Through the group, we learned to share our feelings and experiences with each other honestly. It was okay to have a good day, even if the other person did not. It took the three of us, my husband, myself, and God, to get through this journey.

Taking off the rose-colored glasses

As I emerged from the shadows of grief, I realized I was a different person. Things that used to matter to me no longer held the same importance. Before our son’s death, I thought I had control over the events of life. But I discovered that control was an illusion. Bad things could happen again at any moment. Once my rose-colored glasses came off, I saw the true fragility of our lives. So, I had to change my life.

To find my joy again, I realized my faith and my remaining family had to take the top spot of importance in my life. I refocused my energy on spending time together and creating memories. In John 16:22, “So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy,” I found comfort. My joy returned as I gave up the control of my life to God and trusted Him with my future and my family.

Final Thoughts on How Grief Changes Us

My grief changed me. Sometimes, I wish I could still be the carefree person I was before the sorrow. But, most of the time, I appreciate the new me who puts all my hopes in Jesus Christ. Without Jesus, I would have no hope. My faith teaches me I will see my loved ones again and that God will make everything work out for my good.

Thank you Yvonne for such an informative post on grief. As someone who is dealing with grief (my oldest brother died Jun 1st), your words have been a balm.

August linkup for One Word

Lisa from “LisaNotes” has presented us with an interesting challenge this month as we review our One Word – spark conversations about it.

Here is her post about it:

Have conversations with others this month about your One Word. Make a list of three people you can discuss your word with, and pencil in a time to do it.

Whether in person or online, here are a few questions you can ask (revise as needed to best suit your word):

  • What does my word mean to you?
  • What do you think is the opposite of my word?
  • Do you think about this word rarely or often?
  • Where does this word pop up in your everyday life?
  • Can you give me suggestions for better experiencing or practicing this word?

Listening and talking with others about your word can spark new insights and intentions as you practice it throughout the month.

As I was away for awhile this month, I chose to just interview my friend Linda (who is my writing partner as well). I tw was certainly interesting to hear what she had to say about my word “stretch”. She had made a folder for me with my word which I treasure.

We’ve discussed our words through the year but this a more focused interview.

Here are her answers to the questions above.

  1. First, I think of stretching the body, then stretching the mond, then stretching out of your comfort zone.
  2. Opposite would be curling in on yourself
  3. I don’t think of it often, I should stgretch more often. I tend to be stiff.
  4. I use a lot of elastics and have a huge container of elastics. I do yoga every week adn I do a lot of stretching.
  5. Write a list of ways to stretch yourself out of your comfort zone.

I found our discussion very informative. I realized that stretching out of my comfort zone was one of my goals this year, and one that I really haven’t done much with. I stretch my legs every day but not my mind. I will follow Linda’s advice and make that list.

My Review:

“Momma Would You Ever?” by Rebecca Marklund is a lovel, gentle picture book for young children that explores the constancy of love between parent and child.

My first thought as I read this book was how much it reminded me of the classic Robert Munsch book “Love You Forever”, which I read repeatedly to my children decades ago.

Children always have questions and this child has a repeated question through the years. He wants reassurance that he is loved – as do all children.Love shines through the book and the mother continually reassures her son of the constant love she has for him.

The illustrations are delightful as well and I would highly recommend this book for your child’s library, as I am sure it would be read and reread many times.

BLURB:

Join a boy and his momma on a heartwarming journey through the different stages of life in “Momma Would You Ever?” From tender moments at home to adventurous explorations in the great outdoors, this heartwarming tale celebrates the precious moments and memories that shape our lives.

Written with simplicity and heart, this inspiring children’s book is perfect for families to read together and discuss. Children will be moved by the tender relationship depicted in these pages, while parents and grandparents will appreciate the lessons of love and sacrifice. This inspiring children’s book reminds us that the most valuable things in life are not money and possessions, but the cherished relationships and experiences we share with those we love.

Through the joys of simple moments and the richness of shared memories, “Momma Would You Ever?” reminds us of the beauty of sacrificial love, the value of relationships, and the gift of time.

EXCERPT:

Since this is a children’s picture book, the author has sent an image from the book so you can see a sample of the illustrations and the writing style.

It’s Monday! What are You Reading?

It’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday! What are You Reading? hosted at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

I did not post last Sunday as we left for a week away at a dialysis camp near Dorset, Ontario (about a 4 hr drive north from us). It is run by the Lions Club and allows families to actually have a week at a cottage and their loved one have dialysis 3x that week. We had a lovely time.

I read a lot this week – what with the drive there and back and my hubby at dialysis for 4hr. M/W/F. I read 8 books this week,: – 3 contemporary romances, 3 women’s fiction, an historical fiction and a paranormal.fiction.

Happy Place by Emily Henry. Finally got this from the library and read it and enjoyed it.

Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs. Finally got this one as well from the library -the latest and #13 in her Mercy Thompson paranormal series. A great read, well worth the wait.

Drenched in Light by Lisa Wingate. Another wonderful read by Wingate. So enjoyed this one.

The Tattooist from Auschwitz by Heather Morris. This was based on a real story but there are conflicting stories about it. I enjoyed it, but it was simply written.

Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey. A sweet romance that was enjoyable.

Last One Home by Debbie Macomber. An enjoyable read.

Wish Upon a Star by Sarah Morgan. Two romance novellas that were good reads.

Letter from a Stranger by Barbara Taylor Bradford. This was an interesting read, with glimpses of the war years. I enjoyed it, except for the head bobbing.

Goddess Fish Blog Tour for “Gamble of Hearts” by Virginia Barlow

I am honoured to be part of the Goddess Fish Blog Tour for Virginia Barlow’s historical romance novel Gamble of Hearts

Be sure to check at the end for the giveaway info!

(Please note: I received a free copy in exchange for my honest review.)

My Review

Virginia Barlow’s Gamble of Hearts draws us in quickly, into the world of Amora and Alexander, in Regency London, with Alexander saving her from her vicious brother.
As the couple are drawn closer, with threats and villains on all sides, the gypsy Olga’s predictions make for intriguing suspense as well.

Amora is forced to gamble and faces great danger. Will the predictions prevail? Will she and Alexander follow their hearts?

I really enjoyed Barlow’s historical romance and highly recommend it.

BLURB:

When a powerful duke arrives to collect his winnings from her brother, Lady Amora Hargrove discovers she is one of them. Following her brother’s arrest, she becomes the duke’s ward and falls for him hard and fast. Problem is, the duke has a violent hatred for gamblers, and she possesses a natural ability. Something he can never discover, or she will lose him forever.

The Duke of Ravencroft exacts revenge for his nephew’s death and gains a ward. Irresistibly drawn to the villain’s sister, he must play and gamble with their hearts or lose everything

Excerpt:

He stared at her as if she had gone crazy. His gaze dropped to her mouth, and heat flared in his eyes for a second before his lids dropped over them, shielding his expression. “You want me to find a tutor to teach you how to kiss?” His voice sounded strangled.

Amora giggled. She shocked him out of his cold, stuffy manner, and her success delighted her soul. “I think I shall enjoy his lessons the most.”

The duke’s eye twitched, and his hands fell flat to the tabletop. “There will be no tutor. Your husband shall teach you the proper way to kiss, and…other things. This discussion is over.”

Amora gave him her sweetest smile. “But, your grace, you gave your word.”

He turned to stone before her eyes. The silence lengthened to a full minute. “Aye, I did.” Rising to his feet, he left the room without looking back. If he bothered to turn, he would have seen his houseguest grinning an impish smile as she finished her dinner with relish.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

I have always loved reading romance novels. I used to sneak them from my mom’s room as a young girl and read them while she was gone. As I grew older, my reading and tastes expanded to sci-fi, dystopian, paranormal, and fantasy.

I considered becoming an author in my late twenties but as a busy mother with toddlers, I didn’t have the time. Later, in my fifties, I decided to give it a try and have enjoyed every word of it since. I recently signed my thirteenth contract and am doing my happy dance as I type this. My husband of forty-one years is my greatest support as are all my kids. Most of them are grown and carving out lives for themselves. They are the beat of my heart and with every grandchild, the rhythm gets stronger. I enjoy every moment of my life.

It’s Monday! What are You Reading?

It’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday! What are You Reading? hosted at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

This week was a quiet one til Thursday, when we had a mini flood from our dishwasher. A visit from a plumber and then my hubby’s son, cleared up the leak but the new dishwasher still has to be put it and checked over. And there has been such an abundance of produce from our garden – tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and squash. Lots of healthy eating!

This was a new recipe (and a photo just before they went in the oven)- stuffed Magda squash (which I hadn’t heard of until we grew it – someone must have mixed up the seeds. I thought it was spaghetti squash – altho it is very much like it). I used the small tomatoes without sauce. It turned out quite well.

I read 4 books this week, plus 15 picture books (I’m working on a writing project involving math concepts for kids): – a contemporary romance. a fiction, a woman’s fiction and a paranormal.fiction.

Once Upon Nantucket by Irene Hannon. A romance I enjoyed, with older characters, both having lost partners.

Small Thing s Like These by Claire Keegan. A small, powerful read, set in Ireland.

The Friendship List by Susan Mallery. I picked this up at Goodwill and tho I had read it before, I enjoyed the reread just as much.

Must Love Hellhounds. This paranormal anthology was a fun read, by authors I love (Singh, Briggs for example)

(because there were so many pbs, I won’t list them all, but here are my 4 favourites:

The Blue House by Phoebe Wahl

Free Verse Friday For August – “Vacation”

Free Verse Friday is our year long poetry practice. On the first Friday of each month, Linda and I (and anyone else who joins in) will be writing a poem based on the theme of the month along with the photo taken relating to that theme or that inspired the poem.  I am choosing to write 30 word poems.

This month’s theme is “Vacation”

We have not taken a vacation in several years, although we are finally getting away in a week to a dialysis camp in northern Ontario, where my hubby can get his dialysis three times that week and we can swim and hike and have fun.

The theme got me thinking of past holidays and some of the places I’ve been. My poem grew from these remembrances, altho with only 30 words, I was limited. I could have added so many more!:

Vacations in the Past

First remembered

Ocean Park, Maine

Sand ocean, waves

Then camping

Algonquin Park, Ontario

Trees, swimming, bears

Dad’s birthplace

Glasgow, Scotland, Britain

Castles, London, heather

Many more

Cayman, Mexico, Bahamas

Vancouver, Yukon. ………………………..

(Roatan, Mexico)

Be sure to check out Linda’s poem here.

Be sure to check out poets who have joined in the creative fun!

Check Cheriee Weichel’s here.

We’d love for you to participate as well. Add a link (or your poem) in the comments.

… and sure enough, she gets caught red-handed. All she can do is beg for mercy.

When Jasper catches the gorgeous new maid with her hand in his wallet, his first instinct is to call the police. But Freya’s tearful plea strikes a chord deep within him, and instead he finds himself offering her the protection of his name and family.

Their union is meant to be on paper only but Jasper soon finds himself enthralled by his new bride. He starts a campaign to seduce her into his bed, never expecting her to wiggle her way into his heart.

And when her past threatens her very existence, he will stop at nothing to keep her safe.

Fall headlong into this steamy, fake relationship, stand-alone romance between a fierce Scottish businessman and a single mother as they navigate the road of love with all its pitfalls

Excerpt:

With her heart galloping faster than the speed of sound, she glanced at the door. It felt like she had thousands of eyes watching her, judging her, ready to call her out. She swallowed down any revulsion she felt, because she didn’t have any choices. This was the choice. Then she filched the cash, peeling off three hundred-dollar bills from the stack. It was tempting to take the whole thing and simply run. Grab their belongings at the motel and head off. But she wouldn’t be selfish. This was enough to get her past the next week with rent, food, and diapers. After that, she would figure it out like she always did. She placed the money clip back on the desk and folded the cash to fit in her jeans pocket.

“So. Do you want to call the police or should I, lass?” a deep male voice with a hint of an accent asked behind her.

Oh god no!

She’d been caught stealing. The one time she did something outside the law, she got caught. Freya whipped around and sucked in a panicked breath.

And she was confronted with the most gorgeous man she’d ever encountered.

Mr. Campbell was tall, a few inches above six feet, with some of the broadest shoulders she’d ever seen. They stretched his ivory linen button-up dress shirt obscenely. The shirt looked like it had been spray painted on over his muscles. The ivory shirt contrasted sharply with his thick, inky hair that fell to his shoulders in soft, tousled waves. He had a striking face with thick black brows framing deep-set cobalt eyes that were currently glowering menacingly at her. A proud Norman nose bisected his face and sat above a pair of the most perfectly formed, lush male lips. And his sexy, kissable mouth was shrouded by his close-cropped black beard that did nothing to hide a jawline that was all man and added to his striking physique. He was the poster boy for tall, dark, and hunky. He was all hard angles and drop-dead gorgeous.

With her heart hammering wildly, she blurted out. “I’m sorry. I’m about to be evicted and—”

He sighed deeply and shook his head as he withdrew his phone from the back pocket of his jeans. “Save your lies for the police, lass.”

“Please don’t call the police. I swear I’ll leave and never come back.” She pleaded. Her bottom lip trembled. She couldn’t go to jail. She held up the three hundred-dollar bills and laid them on the desk.

She did not know how she would afford anything, her rent or diapers or food. Because she doubted she would get paid for her work today. Freya wanted to rage at fate, at the unfairness of the cards she’d been dealt. Other people broke the law and didn’t get caught. But she did.

Shit! This made a bad day even worse.

Maybe they should leave today. Stop by the motel, grab what little she had stored there, and go.

And go where? Every place they had run, he’d found them. She didn’t have the gas money to get them far. She had far too many problems and not enough resources to solve them.

He narrowed his eyes and prowled her way. Unholy fear had her quaking in her shoes. Would he hurt her? Would he beat her? Menace rippled off his towering form. She backed up until her butt hit the desk and she had nowhere else to run. Her gaze darted to Maddie in the playpen on the other side of the couch, staring solemnly at the scene.

Please stay quiet, baby. Don’t let him hear or see you.

“You’re not a very good thief if all you were going to take is a lousy three hundred bucks.”

“I’m not a thief,” she sputtered. He scowled, glancing from her to the cash on the desk and then back to her again with a get real expression stamped across his handsome face.

“I mean, okay, I was going to steal it, but only so I could pay rent and buy food. But I really don’t want any trouble. Please, you have the money back. I’ll go, and you’ll never see me again.” Tears threatened, but she steeled herself, unwilling to allow those tears to fall.

“Hmm. What to do?” He reached out. She flinched. It was a knee-jerk reaction after living with her ex, who would hit her whenever the whim struck him. It was far too ingrained in her that he was going to cause her pain, because that’s what men did.

His cobalt eyes narrowed, and he curled his hand around her bicep. Unexpected heat lashed through her at his touch. She licked her bottom lip, and her gaze lowered to his mouth. It really was a sexy one, too. The image of her sucking on his full bottom lip flashed through her brain.

Hello, libido. You do still exist.

The air thickened at his nearness. His scent, a deeply masculine one with notes of sandalwood and something darker, greeted her. And Freya couldn’t explain what manner of madness drove her to do it. Only that she was drawn to that mouth, drawn to him, even though panic beat a drumbeat through her. Maybe fear heightened the sudden onslaught of desire thrumming through her body. Because she leaned up on her tiptoes, planted her mouth over his full lips, and kissed him.

Mr. Campbell’s entire body froze. She traced the seam of his lush lips, hungry to taste him, to tangle their tongues together and nibble on that bottom lip. His lips were smooth as silk. His beard teased her mouth and sent tingles shooting through her body to coalesce in her core. And then he groaned, cupped her face in his large, firm hands, and kissed her. He kissed her like he’d been waiting for her his entire life.
